The Nightmare Continues…. Brief Match Review

The unconvincing performances under the leadership of Giorgos Donis, which started from this summer when AEK played Omonia, have continued to be displayed by the team. AEK drew 3-3 away against recently promoted Thrasivoulos after playing a game of football which if played against any other team would have led to a much worse result for the away side.

AEK scored early and by the end of the first half were up 3-0 although the high score did not accurately represent the low quality level of football being played by AEK. The football was slow and unorganized. The defence made silly errors which Thrasivoulos were fortunately not able to capitalize on and the offense played with lack of the passion that led to many of the 4-0 games that AEK won last year.

The second half was one of the worst moments in the recent history of AEK. Before the team seemed to had woken up from their half time nap the Thrasivoulos offense had managed to score three goals and level the score at 3-3.

After this the AEK forwards started pressuring again however it was never enough to score that much needed fourth goal.

The only bright side of the match would have be the good performance by Ignacio Scocco.

The main topic of discussion on the radio along with AEK’s poor performance was the future of AEK manager Giorgos Donis. It is now being questioned whether he will remain with AEK for long yet nothing is near certain.

AEK are now 7th with only ten points from seven games. Olympiakos remain first even after loosing 1-0 to Aris and Panathinaikos are now 4th after drawing 2-2 at home with Iraklis.

AEK 1-1 Larissa

AEK, after a disappointing performance, luckily managed to get away with 1 point yesterday. The team played a poor game of soccer and only until Basinas was taken out at half time were they able to consistently create chances in front of the Larissa goal. Even then, with both Blanco and Djebbour up front they were still unable to score a goal.

The positive aspect of the game last night was a solid performance by the defence which for the most part included Majstorovic (who played a much improved game compared to previous games), Georgeas (he was reliable, and managed to help bring the ball up many times), Alexopoulos (played a solid game and was definately a suitable replacement for the injured Kyrgiakos) and Koutromanos (if hes given some more time, the young AEK defender should improve even more but he played a decent game nonetheless). Juanfran was out due to the red card which he received during the match against Olympiakos and Kyrgiakos is out for a month due to an injury he picked up while playing for Greece.

More details can be found here.

Below is a short video of highlights from the match.

Greece-Switzerland Half Time Report

Greece is down 1-0 at half time after Switzerland was awarded a penalty which they managed to capitalize on. AEK defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos was pulled out early in the first half after complaining about pains. At the moment, it is not clear whether it is just a cramp or if it is an injury which could prevent him from playing this weekend against Larissa.

Former AEK striker Nikos Liberopoulos has entered the game as a substitute for Theofanis Gekas.

Olympiacos 2-0 AEK

Olympiacos beat an offensively weak AEK yesterday in the second main Athens Derby of the season. This was the first week in the Superleague where AEK did not gain a point (AEK had two draws and two wins up to this point).

Fortunately for AEK, its still early in the season, and there is still time for Donis to clean things up. Defensively, AEK played well and controlled the balls in the air with relative ease. Georgeas played in place of Ramos and this proved to be a good choice by Donis. Midfield wise, AEK were allright, but this was mainly thanks to Pelletieri, who played hard, didnt stop running, and helped distribute the ball when we could. Basinas however was slow, and allthough he made some good passes and defencive moves, his crosses were weak and off target.

The offence was the problem for AEK last night. We could not penetrate far into Olympiacos territory with ease and when we could players were out of position and could not get many serious scoring opportunities (Scocco missed a nice shot when he hit the post and Kyrgiakos had a couple of chances to score from headers on set plays).

Fortunately, it is early in the season and the games for AEK from now on should be easier for AEK untill the start of the second half of the superleague season.

There are some match reviews here, here, and here. Here are the results from the other superleague macthes this weekend.

Other AEK news, Sokrates Papastathopoulos scored for Genoa and recieved a red card. Pantelis Kapetanos scored for Steaua late in the game for Steaua to clinch a late 1-1 draw.
