Panathinaikos 4-1 AEK

Well, I was wrong, we didnt get the win I was expecting, far from it.

There really isnt much good news to say about AEK from this match. AEK played a similar style of football to the how they were playing earlier in the year at games such as our 2-1 loss to Iraklis at home and our   1-0 loss th Larissa. The only difference between those two games and this one today was that today, well, we played even worse.

Its hard to think of anything to say considering how weve been playing the past ten games. The lineup was similar to previous games so it couldnt be that. We clearly werent dishearted from the court decision after seeing how we played when we beat Panionios 5-0, a team that we lost 3-2 to earlier in the season.

Perhaps the players had too much confidence entering the match. We started the two first minutes like we did against oly with a quick chance and control of the ball. Our passing was accurate, nothing was sloppy like it was eariler in the year. But after those first two minutes we quickly seemed to loose all of our calm and play quickly became sloppy and our players seemed to loose confidence.

The main fault that lead to this loss was defence. Three of the four goals could have easily been avoided had our defence been the reliable solid wall it had been at other games. But our defence wasnt the reliable solid wall we were used to. Instead, it was basically nothing, nonexistent. Throughout the game Blanco, Cezar, and Liberopoulos would come back to assist the defence, or rather do its job for it. Julio Cezar made some nice tackles getting all ball, its too bad he would be pushed down by Karagounis every time.

Now, our defence wasnt like the one we had seen during that peroid a few months back, where we had an extremely unreliable defence (the Panionios match we lost is a perfect example of what Im refering to) that would loose possesion in places where you dont want to loose possession such as in front of the goal. Instead, we had a defence that would simply walk aside and let the player with the ball walk right in front of the goal. The defence was never marking anyone, the PAO players could either shoot or pass to whomever they wanted to. And I must say that Macho didnt seem nearly as reliable as he had at other games.

If I had to pick on someone from the defence in particular it would have to be Pliatsikas. Of course nothing can be blamed on Kostenoglou, the players didnt play very well but I want to know WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!?!. Pliatsikas is a rookie, put him in if your playing Veria, even Panionios, but he still doesnt have enough experience to handle PAO no matter what form PAO has been playing in lately. He made many silly tackles that could have gotten him a card. And he took the free kicks. He took the first free kick and it went far over the post. Fine, he was giving it a try. But then he took a second one and did the exact same thing. I think it might have helped slightly if someone else had played. Perhaps Geraldo could have gone in or Ramos. I know left arent the ideal positions for either of the two but we need someone more reliable.

Our offence wasnt as bad as the defence but they couldnt make a pass. It wasnt like our usual offence lately that was calm, made smart passes, nice goals, and rarely gave up possesion. The only goal for AEK came in the 71st minute, a free kick set up perfectly for Rivaldo. It was easy for him, too bad he couldnt have scored a couple more goals (he did have a few chances but couldnt finish with a good shot). Blanco didnt do much except for a chance in the begining. But how could he, he scores goals by being set up with a good midfield and offence that can make constructive passes and get the ball close to the net or get into a good position to cross.

The second half was better for AEK but, being down 4-0 by the end of the first there wasnt much they could do. The passing was a little more organized, the defence a little more reliable and the offence did create a couple of chances (I think the substitution of Kallon in for Lyberopoulos helped the offence) but there was nothing for them to do. Of course, since PAO was up by four they came back and played a more defensive game than the first half which didnt help our weak offence. Lyberopoulos didnt seem to play with much life, much like the first playoff game against Panionios.

The referee tonight wasnt as bad as previous refs. He actually saved us further humiliation by not calling two penalties that PAO could have had and called many of the fouls against us.

PAO really didnt play great, not like how AEK has played at previous games like our match against oly. It was still nonetheless an easy victory for them with few chances for AEK.

AEK went into this game with five goals scored and none against them. Now they have six goals scored and four aginst them. Oh well, games like these happen but hopefully the players will put it behind them and play a good game this Sunday in Athens against Aris.

Squad for Match Against Panathinaikos

Kostenoglou will be taking his usual squad with him to the Appostolos Nikolaidis stadium. The squad will include Macho, Moretto, Dellas, Bourbos, Arruabarrena, Papastathopoulos, Pliatsikas, Geraldo Alves, Edson Silva Ramos, Kone, Julio Cezar, Liberopoulos, and Blanco.

Georgeas and Manduca are still not 100 percent ready.

I cannot find the squad that PAO will be taking but I do know that Gonzales, Endoi, Seric, and Fissas will not be playing.

Maybe olympiacos will have another member joining them at Club 4.

Although no match at the Appostolos Nikolaidis Stadium is never an easy match (this is afterall a derby) AEK should be able to win as long as they have confidence (but not too much of course, although PAO’s form has been pretty bad lately they will still never be an easy team to beat away). The key to AEK getting the result they want will obviously be a quick goal. Whoever scores first will have a much easier game for the rest of the night. If PAO let in a quick goal they will quickly loose the patience of the fans who have not been very impressed with the team lately.

AEK have aquired the full rights to Ismael Blanco, previous superleague top scorer. AEK have aquired his rights from his former Argentinian club Colon Santa Fe. Blanco has said that he is very happy with this saying that it is what he has wanted from when he first played with club. He said he is happy that the fans and the chairman of the team support so much.

The squad the Nikos Kostenoglou will be taking with him is rather similar to the usual. Lyberopoulos, Rivaldo, Edinho, Kone, Macho, Lagos, Kafes, Morretto, Arruabarena, Blanco, Geraldo Alves, Pavlis, Toszer, Pappas, Julio Cesar, Bourbos, Kallon, Pliatsikas, Dellas, Ensaliwa, Edson Silva Ramos.

I am pleased to also see Kapetanos included in the squad for the game tonight. Hopefully is performance is back up to what it was two years ago during Champions League qualification against Hearts.

Gustavo Manduca was complaining about stomach pains and Papastathopoulos is not able to play due to too many cards. Akis Zikos is not playing unfortunately.

CAS oficially rejected Apollon Kalamarias today meaning that olympiacos are now, unfortunately, champions. AEK FC’s official website however shows the standings as oly with 67 points and AEK with 68 points.

This now means that AEK will take place in the playoffs. Nothing right now, however, is certain about when or even if the playoffs will take place.

Right now the schedule is:23rd of April AEK-Panionios, 30th of April PAO-AEK,

4th of May AEK-Aris, 7th of May Aris-AEK, 11th of May Panionios-AEK,

14th of May AEK-PAO

AEK 2-0 Tripolis brief match review

A powerful shot by Rivaldo and a beauty of a goal by Ismael Blanco helped to ensure that if the court’s desicion tomorrow favours Kalamaria (and therefore AEK), AEK are champions. Demis Nikolaidis said that no matter what the outcome, the players, in his eyes, are champions. AEK this year had the best offence in the league (65 goals), the best defence (letting in only 17 goals), the most assists by one player (Rivaldo), and of course, the top scorer ISMAEL BLANCO!!

Today game was the last for a great AEK player, the only greek player to ever play in a Champions League final, AKIS ZIKOS! He had a chance to make the game even more special but missed two penalty shots (the first was saved by the keeper but was redone since the keeper had stepped off the line too early and the second hit the cross bar).

Overall, the game was a solid effort by AEK. The players had a crowd of over 45,000 behind them. The begining of the match was almost all AEK, with Tripolis barely managing to gain possesion for more than a minute at a time. Although AEK had some chances to score early on the first goal didn’t come until the 43rd minute. It was a powerful, low shot by Rivaldo (today was Rivaldo’s 36th birthday) from a few metres outside the penalty box. Rivaldo’s performance today was great, he ran hard throughout the match and made a beautiful pass near the end.

Eleven minutes into the second half Ismael Blanco scored the second goal for AEK off of an assist by Edinho. The goal was a beautiful bicycle kick placed to the far right of the goal where the Tripolis keeper could not reach it. Blanco also had a chance to score earlier however his shot could not find the net.

Lyberopoulos also had a chance to increase the lead but his shot also missed.

Dellas’s performance today was rather sloppy compared to other matches. He gave up possesion a couple of times and his defense was not the most solid compared to other games.

The substitutions were Manduca for Edinho, Pliatsikas for Georgeas, and Toszer for Kafes.

The atmoshpere was wonderful at the Athens Olympic Stadium tonight. 45,000 AEK supporters were cheering and singing constantly and the flares seemed to never end. Many fans swarmed the pitch shortly before the match ended, and many more came on after (I was among them!, it was an amazing experience to be able to stand in the middle of the Olympic stadium after an AEK match). The players were engulfed by the fans and Rivaldo seemed more than happy to be with them (he was still holding four fingers up showing that he will never forget AEK’s 4-0 victory against olympiacos). Zikos however seemed a little overwhelmed after being surrounded and hugged by hundreds of fans. The fans on the pitch took apart the goal posts and many, including me, took a bit of the grass from the field.

Today’s Lineup
